Coaching with the Leadership Agility Compass

Last night I did my third presentation for the Massachusetts Bay OD Learning Group, this time focused on how coaches can use the Leadership Agility framework and related methods to augment the way they work with leaders. Whereas my first presentation for this association focused mainly on conveying the model (agility levels, 3 action arenas, 4 kinds of agility), this one was more applied and experiential.

We focused on using the Leadership Agility Compass (4 kinds of agility) in coaching. Using their real-life coaching relationships, participants worked with key coaching questions, linked to each type of agility, which can help leaders stretch from one level of agility to another.

Leadership Agility 360 Certification Workshop - April 27-28

Debbie Whitestone and I just finished the third Coach Certification Workshop for the Leadership Agility 360, held on April 27-28 at the Hyatt in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A very gratifying workshop with a wonderful group of very experienced coaches who came from Australia, Germany, Sweden, and Tailand, as well as from various US locations.

Agile Leadership at the Royal Canadian Mint

Just finished co-leading the 4th Agile Change Leader workshop delivered in Canada. This time for the Royal Canadian Mint, a long-time client of Dorothy Hutt of the Collaborative Leadership Institute. The workshop is an outgrowth, in part, of Dorothy's 7-month action learning program there, focusing primarily on reading the book and applying practices based on the book and related material - a very successful program!

Leadership Agility in Integral Life Newsletter

Shortly after the ITC conference (see below), I received a call from Robb Smith, President of the Integral Institute and of Integral Life, and a keynote speaker at the conference. This conversation led, among other things, to the inclusion of an announcement in this month's Integral Life e-newsletter about the Agile Change Leader Workshop I'll be co-leading in Ottawa in October with Gilles Brouillette of the Collaborative Leadership Institute. (More on this later).

Integral Leadership as Agile Leadership

Just returned from a fulfilling few days at the Integral Theory Conference in San Francisco. I was glad to find that the conference was open to multiple views of "Integral" and that there was a significant emphasis on practical application, especially in areas like leadership and coaching. Interesting key-notes by Roger Walsh, Suzanne Cook-Greuter, and Robb Smith.

I was privileged to do one of the longer lead-off presentations, which allowed me to show that Leadership Agility is very much an Integral understanding of leadership development. It was very well-received, and I enjoyed meeting many new, interesting people. One result - an invitation to bring Leadership Agility to Sweden, which I'll be writing about in future posts.

Leadership Agility as Integral Leadership

Just got back yesterday from presenting at the Integral Theory Conference in San Francisco. About 500 people attended. This was my first opportunity to bring Leadership Agility to an Integral audience, and in many ways it felt like coming home, coming full circle - especially when I think about the long paper I wrote long ago in my mid-twenties, which was in many ways the fore-runner of the book. Back then, the key sources of inspiration were Bill Torbert's early work, Jane Loevinger's first book, Ego Development, and Ken Wilber's first book, The Spectrum of Consciousness.

For a number of years, Torbert was the only person I knew who had what is now called the Integral vision. Now, here I was able to present my version of Integral Leadership to a whole room of interested people.

I was privileged to be invited to do one of the lead-off presentations, which gave me an opportunity to meet many interesting people who came up to me during the next few days to connect and talk about Leadership Agility. Among other things, this led to an invitation to bring Leadership Agility to Sweden. (More on this later).

First LA360 Coach Certification Workshop

On July 7-8, Debbie Whitestone and I facilitated the first (pilot) Leadership Agility 360 Certification Workshop for coaches. The workshop was held at a charming conference center in Essex, Massachusetts. 20 coaches attended. Most were coaches in the Boston area who have been tuning into the work over the past 1-2 years, but we also had coaches fly in from the UK, Canada, and other parts of the US.

When it was all over, we and the participants had learned a lot. And we found the last go-round at the end of the workshop very encouraging and heart-warming.

The workshop is part of a 3-step process for becoming certified to use the Leadership Agility 360 with clients. The first part is preparation for the workshop, and the third part involves doing two initial client debriefs, which are then reviewed my me. 2nd Canadian Public Workshop on Leadership Agility

On June 5-6, I co-led a second 2-day public workshop on Leadership Agility in Ottawa, Ontario, with Dorothy Hutt (see previous post). We were assisted by Gilles Brouillette, the other principal in the Collaborative Leadership Institute (CLI).

The workshop was sponsored by Bell Canada. About half the participants came from Bell. The other half came from a variety of other organizations. Another enthusiastic response.
